Ash & Rose

Ash & Rose began with a mother, a daughter, and a pile of vintage nobody wanted to part with. Around 2010, Mary and Nea Savoca started selling their own vintage finds online. By 2014 they had a website, and by 2015 a boutique in Boston's South End. Then a flood closed that shop at the start of the pandemic. They didn't sit still. They teamed up with home sewers and donated about 5,000 masks to people experiencing homelessness.

Today Ash & Rose works from a studio in an old mill building in Framingham. Nea turns vintage and designer deadstock fabric into one-of-a-kind purses. Their candles are hand-poured from soy wax with botanical fragrances. The rest comes from fair trade partners, like the women artisans in Peru who weave and embroider the wool belts.

Their motto is Ethical + Sustainable + Beautiful, and Mary puts it plainly: "If I'm going to be putting something out into the world, I want it to be making the world better and not worse."

Squirrel, fawn, owl, or raccoon? Pick your critter. These woodland hats are locally handmade in small batches from 100% upcycled cashmere sweaters, washed and shrunk first for an extra-soft, fuzzy feel, then finished with a hand-appliqued animal. The squirrel comes in newborn (about 0 to 3 months) and baby (about 3 to 12 months), the shy fawn in baby, the owl in toddler for most little ones ages 1 to 2, and the striped-tail raccoon in child size. Colors range from blush and mint to deep navy and lime, and each hat varies a little in size, shade, and texture.

With sizes from the very first weeks up to child, there's a soft hat for nearly every small head on your list. One gently used sweater, one very warm second life.
