Slow North

Slow North started the way a lot of good things do: in a backyard garage, with a new baby in the house. In 2015, after her first son was born, founder Michelle Simmons went looking for candles with ingredients she actually wanted to breathe around her family. She didn't love what she found, so she started pouring her own in Austin, Texas.

That garage project grew into a studio that still hand pours every candle in small batches. The recipes are lean: soy wax, cotton wicks, and 100% essential oils. No synthetic fragrance, no artificial dyes, no mystery list on the label. Soaps, linen sprays and reed diffusers followed, all built on the same idea. Fewer, better ingredients, and scents that are familiar.

Here's the part we really love. Slow North gives 10% of its profits to four causes: the Central Texas Food Bank, The SAFE Alliance, RAICES, and Kiva micro-loans. So the candle on your nightstand is also helping keep pantries stocked and neighbors supported back home in Texas and around the world.

Simple ingredients, easy rituals, and a little good done. That's Universal Design with a warm glow.

Somebody just came in from weeding with dirt up to the elbows, and the kitchen sink is the closest stop. Hand them one of these. Every Slow North bar starts with the same honest base: coconut oil for a big lather, olive oil for balance, castor oil for dense bubbles, plus shea butter, rice bran, and sunflower oil to keep things creamy. Description

Cinnamon, black pepper, and patchouli. Dark and spiced, and the most surprising thing in the line. If you already love the Moonglow candle, this is the same blend, and you know what you're getting.

Moroccan clay gives it the color.

The base is the same in every bar we make. Coconut oil for hardness and a big lather, olive oil as the counterweight so it isn't all bubbles, castor oil to make that lather dense rather than airy, shea butter for creaminess, and rice bran and sunflower to soften the bar. Sodium hydroxide is the lye, which is what turns oil into soap and is used up in the making of it.

Scented with essential oils, as with everything we make. Good for hands and body.

How to Use: Wet with water and lather. For optimal lather, use with a soap-saver bag. To prolong the bar's life, place on a soap dish.

External use only. Discontinue use if rash or irritation occurs.
